TOEFL® Reading Scores Now Matched With Lexile® Measures

Test Takers Can Use Proven Measures to Build Reading Skills

PRINCETON, NJ--(Marketwire - October 1, 2009) - ETS, creator of the TOEFL® test, has joined with MetaMetrics®, Inc., creator of The Lexile Framework® for Reading, to link TOEFL Reading section scores with Lexile® measures, officials of both companies announced today.

The Lexile Framework scientifically measures both an individual's reading ability and the difficulty of text on the same developmental scale. Lexile measures help individuals to select high-interest materials that will provide an appropriate level of challenge to promote reading development. Lexile measures are expressed as numbers followed by an "L" (for example, 1050L) and range from below 200L for beginning readers and materials to above 1700L for advanced readers and materials.

Linking a TOEFL Reading section score with a Lexile measure helps test takers practice reading more effectively to improve their skills and better prepare for advanced academic coursework. Test takers can match their TOEFL Reading section score with a Lexile measure at, then use MetaMetrics' "Find a Book" utility to identify books at their reading level.

"The best way for someone to improve his or her reading skills is to practice," says Malbert Smith III, Ph.D., President of MetaMetrics. "Lexile measures make that practice more meaningful by matching individuals with reading materials on the topics that interest them the most and provide an appropriate level of reading challenge."

To determine the relationship between Lexile measures and TOEFL Reading section scores, ETS and MetaMetrics conducted a research study of more than 3,000 participants who completed both a TOEFL Reading section and a Lexile reading test. Researchers examined participants' performance on these tests and developed a table to match an individual's TOEFL Reading section score with a Lexile measure.

"We are always looking for ways to provide additional value to test takers," says Tony Ostrander, Director of TOEFL Product Management for ETS. "Connecting TOEFL scores to Lexile measures provides test takers with tools to help them select reading texts appropriate for their reading level, improve their skills and monitor their progress."

More than 115,000 fiction and nonfiction books, as well as tens of millions of articles, have Lexile measures, and these numbers continue to grow. This wide range of resources with Lexile measures helps to ensure that TOEFL test takers can find reading materials at their Lexile level.
