The Toledo Hospital Breast Care Center Nationally Recognized for Breast Imaging Technology

TOLEDO, OH--(Marketwire - June 17, 2010) -  The Toledo Hospital (TTH) Breast Care Center, a member of ProMedica Health System, has been recognized by a national organization for its commitment to providing high-quality Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology dedicated to breast imaging. It is the only center in Ohio with a three-year accredited Dedicated Breast MRI System, according to the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Magnetic Resonance Laboratories (ICAMRL).

In order to qualify, a center must undergo a comprehensive self-evaluation process, which includes submitting detailed information on all aspects of laboratory operation and actual case studies. The data is reviewed to determine quality compliance and is approved by the ICAMRL Board of Directors.

"This designation raises our visibility across the nation as a Center of Excellence and will help attract the industry's leading physicians and technologists to the region," says Robin Shermis, MD, radiologist and medical director of TTH Breast Care Center.

TTH was the first health system in Ohio and Michigan to offer the Aurora Dedicated Breast MRI System, which is designed exclusively for breast imaging. It can detect tumors that are not typically identified by mammograms. The technology uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to create high-quality, 3-D bilateral images of the breasts, which make tumors easier to detect.

TTH Breast Care Center is an accredited breast imaging center with a team of five fellowship-trained radiologists. The center is devoted exclusively to patients with breast health concerns and issues. It features the latest technology and state-of-the-art breast screening and diagnostic services, including same-day biopsies. In 2009, it was named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for meeting the highest standards of the radiology profession and achieving accreditation in mammography, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsy and stereotactic breast biopsy. TTH Breast Care Center supports several centers in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.
