Market Research Company Euromonitor International released today a ranking of the top 100 city destinations in terms of international tourist arrivals for 2012. These cities collectively saw international arrivals increase by 6.6% in 2012, while overall growth globally was only 4.2%.
According to the research, six cities within the top 10 are located in Asia. Overall, 32 of the top 100 city destinations are in Asia Pacific with Western Europe in second with 12 cities.
Hong Kong and Singapore maintained their first and second place spots, respectively, in 2012 while Bangkok moved into third place. An influx of Chinese visitors to Thailand contributed to Bangkok's 14.6% growth in 2012, allowing the city to surpass London in terms of international arrivals. London saw 2.3% growth, which was a reasonable performance. Although expectations were high for the London Summer Olympics, the event discouraged some international visitors, causing a 5% dip in international arrivals in July 2012 compared to July 2011.
According to Head of Travel and Tourism Research, Caroline Bremner, "Over the next five years, the number of international travellers from China and Russia will increase significantly, outpacing the growth of other countries. City destinations will need to court these travellers through better visa policies, better relationships with tour operators, expanded airline capacity and strong marketing."

- Singapore, Singapore
- Bangkok, Thailand
- London, United Kingdom
- Macau, Macau
