Top Docs Radio on Midtown Business RadioX Examines Mitochondrial Diseases and Hyperbaric Medicine

ATLANTA, GA--(Marketwired - February 23, 2015) - On January 30th, 2015, Top Docs Radio welcomed to the studio Dr. John Shoffner, Neurologist and Geneticist with Medical Neurogenetics, Laura Stanley with the Foundation for Mitochondrial Medicine, and Dr. Helen Gelly with HyperbaRXs. Host CW Hall spoke with these experts in the fields of mitochondrial diseases and hyperbaric medicine.

Laura Stanley's son was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease. This life changing incident is what started her role in her non-profit experience with mitochondrial diseases. Stanley and Dr. Shoffner shared how they are working to improve awareness of mitochondrial diseases and, through research, uncover treatments to halt or at least slow the effects of these diseases.  The ultimate goal is to find a way to prevent or reverse these problems.

"There are no specific treatments for mitochondrial diseases," said Stanley. "I got involved about five or six years ago because my son was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease and the journey to diagnosis is a difficult one. It isn't very straightforward, and what I have learned over the past few years is that no two stories are alike. When I was leaving my corporate HR role at EarthLink, we had just gotten our diagnosis and I had just heard about this non-profit and decided to get involved... and became the first part time staff member there."

Dr. Helen Gelly spoke about the article she co-wrote with Dr. Caroline Fife in Today's Wound Clinic entitled, "Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Wound Care: A Service Under True Pressure." In the article, Dr. Gelly and Dr. Fife talked about how large numbers of Medicare Administrative Contractors and Commercial insurers are making changes to indications they are willing to reimburse hyperbaric oxygen therapy.  That means that patients with injuries that put them at risk for amputation or for degraded quality of life due to previous radiation therapy may not be able to receive this scientifically proven, effective treatment.

The panel concluded that hyperbaric medicine specialists must begin to activate and collaborate to protect this evidence-proven treatment modality.
