Top Tips for Dealing With a Blocked Toilet

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 28, 2012) - A blocked toilet can be an extremely messy household problem during the summer. Drain repair experts Dyno-Rod are here to tackle the problem head on with some handy top tips for householders on how to deal with blockages, quickly and easily.

Stop flushing!

When faced with a blocked toilet, many homeowners react by flushing the cistern repeatedly. Unfortunately this is unlikely to solve the problem and could cause the toilet to overflow and flood the entire bathroom. If this happens an emergency plumber is usually the only option left open.

Plunge

A plunger is often the best tool for clearing a heavy blockage such as toilet paper. Pull on a pair of gloves and goggles before pushing the plunger all the way to the bottom of the toilet bowl, then pump backwards and forwards repeatedly.

Check drains

If the water doesn't clear from the cistern after about 10 plunging motions, the problem could be a blocked drain. Drain inspection covers are usually located outside the house; lift the one nearest to the toilet to see whether a chamber is blocked. If you can see a blockage and you cannot easily dislodge it from the drain, then calling a plumber is advised.

Clean

If all of the above fails, the next stop is a chemical cleaner. Drain cleaning solutions are available in a range of strengths to dissolve blockages when poured into a toilet bowl or pipe. Remember; all cleaners are different and you should follow the instructions printed on the bottle when using. Always wear gloves and goggles when using chemical solutions and ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated before proceeding.

Call in the experts

If a toilet still refuses to flush or quickly becomes blocked again, it's time to research drains experts in your area. A professional expert will use a drain camera to locate the problem and then use an electric eel or water-jetting machine to clear the blockage quickly.
