Tories Tax Policies Will Hit Van Drivers Hardest, Warns Swinton Commercial

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 30, 2011) - 2011 looks set to be a tough year for Van drivers, as the latest tax increases implemented by the coalition Government look to hit commercial drivers hardest and mean they'll be getting less mileage for their money.

The price of petrol increased yet again to an average of 128.27p per litre last week, as the Government announced a 0.76p increase in fuel duty tax, which combined with the 20% increase in VAT, means petrol prices are at a record high and have increased on average 16.3p in the past year.

The news comes at a bad time for the commercial market, as towards the end of 2010 the market seemed buoyant with new van registrations up over 15% on last year. Swinton Commercial, one of the leading high street retailers of commercial van insurance, is warning van drivers and fleet managers to be more conscious of fuel consumption and invest in some time teaching drivers how to be more fuel-efficient.

Swinton Commercial is issuing some money saving tips on how to maximise mpg:

1. Have a clear out – get rid of any unnecessary items weighting your van down

2. Check the tyre pressures weekly – underinflated tyres put more pressure on the sidewalls and slow your vehicle down

3. Accelerate cleanly - Don't over-rev your car when pulling away, try to change gear at 3,000rpm or 2,500rpm for diesels.

4. Get into the highest gear possible – get into the highest gear possible at the safest time

5. Switch off the engine - make sure you switch off your engine if you're going to be stationary for more than three minutes.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton said," Our van insurance customers have watched fuel prices rise steadily over the past year and this latest increase in petrol prices could tip some drivers too far. The best way to reduce costs is to be conscious of fuel consumption and try and be more fuel efficient by following the tips above and with careful route planning."
