Toronto 1 employees to form union

Canadian Media Guild applies for certification at Toronto TV station Attention: Arts/Entertainment Editor, Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Media Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 11, 2005) - The Canadian Media Guild has filed for certification to represent approximately 80 employees at Toronto 1, the local television station now owned by Quebecor.

Over the past few months, Toronto 1 employees have been working with the Guild to bring a union to the station to address long hours, unpaid overtime, arbitrary decisions and lack of planning, among other things.

"Young people working in TV have some significant concerns, even though they work in a so-called glamour industry," says Lise Lareau, president of the Canadian Media Guild. "Because the industry is considered a 'hot' place to be, employers can and do take advantage of people."

The application is now in the hands of the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

The Canadian Media Guild is the fastest growing media union in Canada. The Guild represents nearly 6,000 people across Canada who work in all areas of media production for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada, TVOntario, the Aboriginal Peoples' Television Network, VisionTV, Canadian Press/Broadcast News, Reuters and Agence France-Presse.
