Toronto Mayoral Candidate Rocco Rossi Protests Outrageous Closures of City Pools During Heat Wave

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 1, 2010) - STATEMENT – Issued September 1, 2010 at the gates Kiwanis Outdoor Pool in Stan Wadlow Park in East York.

I'm here at high noon on a day with an extreme heat advisory in effect for Toronto outside a locked gate with fellow Toronto residents.

Inside the gate is a city pool with clean, cool water.

City Hall locked this gate.

I know this pool well. I grew up around here and went to the middle school two blocks away. When I was young, I swam in this very pool. In those days, that was the only way I spent summer holidays. My family couldn't afford to send me to camp and we didn't have the extra money to go on nice trips. And today in this city there are lots of kids growing up just the way I did, and having access to recreational programs, like swimming, should be their right…especially when there is a heat wave!

They and their families are counting on City Hall to be there for them.

The politicians at City Hall locked the gate letting Toronto residents sweat it out. Why? Because the City can't afford to keep its pools open in the summer.

The books are so badly mismanaged and spending is so out of control that the children of this city, on a day where the temperature is 38 degrees with humidity, cannot go swimming. Their parents have paid their taxes and City Hall has mis-spent the money.

Providing such basic services such as recreation should be easy. Letting families swim in taxpayer paid pools is our right. This week City Hall changed the hours at many Toronto pools and locked the gate during the day...during a heat wave. This just doesn't make sense. This should not happen. City Hall is responsible for this. Change must come to City Hall.

The current priorities at City Hall are out of whack and it is time for Toronto residents to Take Back Our City Hall. On October 25th we can make history by electing someone who is not a career politician as their mayor. Instead, they can choose to elect me, Rocco Rossi.

I am running for mayor to represent the people of Toronto. Toronto needs a mayor from outside the same old political culture. Career politicians like Rob Ford, George Smitherman and Joe Pantalone don't get the job done, yet they are running for mayor.

It is time to stop rewarding incompetence, it is time to change the culture, it is time Take Back City Hall and vote for me, Rocco Rossi for mayor. I represent real change.
