Toronto's Top Employers -- Not Who You Think?

New Toronto Board of Trade directory shows public sector dominates list of major employers

Attention: Business/Financial Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 14, 2007) - The Toronto Board of Trade reports today that the public sector dominates the latest list of the GTA's top employers. According to the Board's new 2007/08 directory, more than a third of the top ranked organizations are public institutions.

"There are 23 major employers in the GTA with more than ten thousand employees each," explains Board Vice-President Mary de Reus, editor of the new Contact Toronto publication, "Eight of them are public institutions, including the City of Toronto, Canada Post, the TTC, local school boards and universities. In other words, more than a third of our biggest employers are in the public sector."

Private sector entries on the top employer list include Canada's five biggest banks, major retailers, and communications giants Bell Canada and ROGERS.

The list of the top 23 employers was compiled as part of the annual Contact Toronto directory, which identifies 4,000 companies across the Toronto region with 75 employees or more. The directory, the only one of its kind for the GTA, goes on sale today in print and electronic formats.

"We had to winnow through all 150,000 businesses in all 29 municipalities in the Toronto region," notes de Reus, "for those who rank as major employers and to obtain contact information for their top executives. While the public sector dominates the top-ranked list, the overall results clearly demonstrate the diversity of Toronto's economy."
