Toronto's Top Style Editors and Milliners Team Up for Buy Design Spring Social

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 30, 2010) - Two heads are better than one…especially when it comes to creating a fashionable hat! Toronto's top style-makers are adding a fun twist to Buy Design Spring Social, a 1930s post-depression-inspired party, scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2010, at the Distillery District. The event raises funds for Windfall, Canada's only new clothing and basic-needs items bank.

"Buy Design's guests always impress us with how enthusiastically they embrace the event's theme. So we invited the city's top style editors and milliners to collaborate on designing boater hats that will be showcased during the evening," says Andrew Sardone, Buy Design co-chair. And the dream teams are:

  • Jennifer Campbell, FASHION Magazine, and Nicole McInnis of Oh Dina!

  • Nathalie Atkinson, National Post, and Karyn Gingras of Lilliput Hats

  • Amy Verner, Globe and Mail, and Jillian Wood, founder of Headmistress

  • Sarah Nicole Prickett, EYE Weekly, and Lara Vincent

  • Anita Clarke, I Want-I Got, and Danielle Suppa of Le Petit Beret

The pairs welcomed the invitation and are producing five stunning pieces. "We're playing with the classic boater design, keeping everything tailored on the hat and mixing up gingham, blush pink and brilliant salmon-coloured suede into a crisp ribbon detail inspired by Japanese paper fans," says Jennifer Campbell.

Historical inspiration is behind the creation of Karyn Gingras and Nathalie Atkinson, who says, "We decided to avoid being literal and instead, played with the idea of a boater and its interpretations throughout fashion history to create a high-fashion mash-up that has bits of inspiration from across the various boater eras."

Sea lovers will go crazy over the creation by duo Amy Verner and Jillian Wood. Their piece uses navy and red accents on an ivory base, playing up the nautical theme. "The only thing missing is the beautiful yacht!" says Amy.

Lara Vincent and Sarah Nicole Prickett have very different tastes; one loves Liberty prints while the other embraces Breton stripes. Their boater is a clever and fashionable mix of both. And lastly, Danielle and Anita are keeping their creation a surprise to be unveiled at the event!

Guests at Buy Design Spring Social will have the opportunity to bid on the five boaters in the event's silent auction.

Tickets can be purchased online at or by calling 416.703.8435. $75 or six for $375, and $80 at the door.
