Tour de l'Abitibi Positions Itself on International Stage with Support from Government of Canada

AMOS, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - July 8, 2014) - Canada Economic Development

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, took the occasion of the announcement of the Tour de l'Abitibi Desjardins 2014 official teams to underscore that the promoter of this cycling event―Le Tour cycliste de l'Abitibi Inc.―received funding to promote the event on European markets, particularly in France.

Awarded in 2012, this financial assistance was granted in the form of a $153,650 non-repayable contribution through Canada Economic Development's Quebec Economic Development Program.

Quick facts

  • This financial support enabled the Tour cycliste de l'Abitibi to position itself in Europe for its 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions by undertaking public and media relations activities on the continent. Promotional activities also included hosting foreign journalists in the region and live and differed broadcasts of the races.
  • Commercialization is designed to draw a greater number of tourists from outside Canada, generating major economic spinoffs for the Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
  • The 46th Tour de l'Abitibi will take place in Amos, from July 21 to 27, 2014, as part of the city's Centennial celebrations.

Quote

"By lending financial support to the Tour cycliste de l'Abitibi, our government is showing that it is committed to the growth of tourism, a profitable sector for the Quebec and Canadian economy."

Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec
