TOWN HALL Los Angeles Panel Calls for Participation in 2010 Census

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - February 25, 2010) -  TOWN HALL Los Angeles and the California Community Foundation present the panel discussion "Everyone Counts: 2010 Census" on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy. All Angelenos are invited to attend this FREE event, but registration is required. Please call 213.628.8141.

As dictated in the US Constitution, a census will be conducted "within every subsequent term of 10 years" of the Congress. March 15, 2010 marks the launch of the count, with forms going out to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. The 2010 Census aims to count all US residents -- citizens and noncitizens alike. According to the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund's new report, a dozen major cities are falling short of outreach, which could impact the redrawing of legislative boundaries.

Los Angeles Mayor, The Honorable Antonio Villaraigosa, will kick off the panel with opening remarks. Panelists include The Honorable Mike Davis, Assembly Member - District 48, California Assembly Select Committee on the Census; Sneha Desai, Assistant Regional Census Manager, Partnership Program, Los Angeles Regional Census Center; Sal Mendoza, Senior Vice President, Community Reinvestment, City National Bank; and Norma Vega, Executive Director, Office of the Census 2010, City of Los Angeles. Moderating the panel is Antonia Hernandez, President and CEO of the California Community Foundation.

According to the US Census Bureau, the 2010 Census will help communities attain more than $400 billion in federal funds each year for hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, public works projects and emergency services. Dating back to 1790, the data collected by the census also determine public advocacy, disease prevention studies, research markets, and rescue operations.
