Town of Springhill outside workers give CUPE strong strike mandate

SPRINGHILL, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2012) - The union representing outside workers with the Town of Springhill has received an overwhelming strike vote from its 21 members.

CUPE National Representative Betty Jean Sutherland says, "Local 919 has voted 86% in favour of job action to back its Negotiating Committee. The main outstanding issues are wages and a demand for concessions to their current provision covering Workers' Compensation Benefits."

Says Sutherland, "The wage offer that this employer tabled doesn't even come close to the pattern that's been established by other municipalities in Nova Scotia.

Sutherland says both sides will be heading to conciliation with the Department of Labour on March 21 and she hopes the Town takes a more reasonable position so that a disruption in services can be avoided.
