LINTHICUM, MD--(Marketwire - Apr 12, 2011) - Marriott International (NYSE: MAR) recognizes April as Environmental Awareness month and celebrates Earth Day on Friday, April 22, 2011. The TownePlace Suites BWI is the first Existing Building (EB) LEED Certified hotel in the in the state of Maryland. The hotel in Linthicum Heights, MD is taking a leadership role in recognizing and celebrating Earth Day and Marriott's Environmental Awareness Month.

On Earth Hour, which took place on March 26, 2011, the suites hotel and its guests joined other businesses and groups in the US in sending a message about the environment by turning off non-essential lights and electrical equipment.

In continuing with the hotel's commitment to operate in a sustainable fashion, the TownePlace Suites BWI again is inviting its guests to join in their efforts. During Baltimore Green Week, April 17 - 23, 2011, hotel guests will be offered an opportunity to offset their carbon footprint of a one night stay by contributing $1 to Marriott International's "Green Your Stay" Rainforest Preservation Program. Additionally the green hotel in Baltimore will match every guest's contribution.

When asked about why this BWI hotel and his company believed in this effort Mike Dickens, President of Hospitality Partners and an owner of the hotel said, "One of the guiding principles of Marriott is the Spirit to Serve. At the TownePlace Suites BWI and for our company we believe we are bringing meaning to that belief by running our hotel as environmentally responsible as possible. This is a smart business practice and we believe our guests appreciate what we are doing. Also I recently became a grandfather and I am more aware than ever that the legacy and the world we leave for the generations to come will be largely how our lives will be and should be measured."

The TownePlace Suites BWI International Airport accommodations provide a free waste-neutral breakfast that includes compostable plates and utensils. They purchase local products where ever possible, provide primary parking for hybrid cars and performance bicycles for guests seeking outdoor activity. This Baltimore hotel with bikes has these and many more environmental policies in place.

In August of 2010 the TownePlace Suites was awarded the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Existing Building (EB) certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building is designed and operated to provide enhanced energy savings, water efficiency, emissions reduction and overall environmental quality. LEED certification is available for both existing buildings (EB) that have been retrofitted to comply with USGBC standards and those newly constructed.
