TPP would open TFW floodgates

Labour mobility sections of trade deal will put Canadians out of work

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 18, 2016) - The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will undermine the Canadian labour market, the leader of Alberta's largest labour organization will warn at a hearing on Tuesday.

Alberta Federation of Labour president Gil McGowan will present to the House of Commons' International Trade Committee at 10:30 on Tuesday, April 19. In his presentation, McGowan will focus on the portions of the TPP dealing with the ability of corporations to transfer workers from one country to another.

"The TPP means that employers will be able to bring in more exploitable workers with fewer rights from more countries." McGowan said. "The labour mobility sections of this deal are like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program on steroids. The TPP should be scrapped based on these sections alone. It's a bad deal for Canadian workers."
