Traffic Logix Next Generation Radar Speed Signs Now Offer Radar Device With the Most Accurate Internal Traffic Counter Available

SPRING VALLEY, NY--(Marketwire - November 17, 2008) - Many radar speed signs include a traffic counter to provide data on numbers, speeds, and behavior of passing motorists. The information gleaned from this data is often used to generate reports and analyze issues and concerns. However, the radar units found in most radar signs to provide speed and traffic data does not provide entirely accurate information. After conducting studies that repeatedly exhibited this, Traffic Logix has upgraded all the company's signs to a new radar system. This new system, incorporating recent advancements in radar technology, provides the most precise data of any radar unit in the industry.

Chart 1 demonstrates the discrepancy between the traffic data supplied by a standard radar unit, illustrated by the blue line, and the data supplied by a traffic counter placed on the road, shown in red. The traffic counter shown in red is often used to conduct traffic analysis and provides highly accurate vehicle and speed information. As shown in the chart, the standard radar unit provides data that is often entirely different than the actual numbers. It is hardly ever accurate, and at times, such as for example 11:45 pm on Chart 1, it is completely erroneous.

The data inaccuracy primarily stems from the fact that traditional data collection algorithms rely on and process the speed data sent from the radar for traffic calming purposes. This data is not designed to offer information about the broader traffic patterns on the road. When multiple vehicles pass simultaneously, only the faster car's speed is picked up and transmitted to the controller, providing for obvious discrepancies and flawed data for analysis.

As shown in Chart 2, the new radar units used in the Traffic Logix signs, in comparison, provide nearly the exact same data as the traffic counter does. This precision is achieved by using a different system to process and record data. While other radars transmit the speed data to an external controller, the new system processes, records, and stores all the data inside the radar unit itself. It only sends the information to the sign controller card once it has finished processing and recording the relevant information. Unlike traditional radar units, which have trouble differentiating between multiple vehicles, the new system can count multiple cars at multiple speeds simultaneously. Additionally, it can distinguish vehicles following each other at similar speeds. This results in significantly better data accuracy.

In addition to the improved accuracy, the new radar units are environmentally friendly as well. They consume less power than most other radar units, a welcome addition to the already green Traffic Logix signs. The low power usage of the radar units results in an operating cost that is four times lower than the industry standard. The Traffic Logix radar signs already offer an optional solar panel and contain an optical system that allows LEDs to function at only 30% of their power while providing optimal visibility.

The new radar units are now included with all Traffic Logix signs. The signs are available with or without the data collection feature, and can be upgraded to include this feature at any time, even after initial installation. For more information on Traffic Logix radar speed signs, visit
