Traffic Logix Speed Cushions Start the Traffic Calming Program in Florence, AL

FLORENCE, AL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 11, 2007 -- When the citizens of Florence, Alabama began complaining about the danger of speeding traffic on their streets, the city began to explore its alternatives.

After testing out products from several traffic calming product manufacturers, Florence decided to proceed with Traffic Logix speed cushions. While the Traffic Logix products were chosen based on their quality and competitive pricing, public works individuals reported that the products were easier to install than the others that the city tested.

The reason Florence chose to use speed cushions to slow traffic, instead of speed humps or speed tables, was based on discussions with officials in Huntsville, Alabama, where a successful traffic calming program is already in place.

The streets where traffic needed to be slowed in Florence were main thoroughfares that are used by fire engines and other emergency vehicles. The City of Huntsville faced a similar scenario in their traffic calming program. They recommended the speed cushions since the split design successfully slows cars down without impeding emergency vehicles.

The city of Florence has installed the speed cushions on several local streets based on a set of criteria that residents must meet to be approved.

Bill Batson, the City Engineer in Florence, noted that they intend to expand the program and install more Traffic Logix cushions as the need arises. "We've been quite happy with the Traffic Logix products," Mr. Batson reported. "And more importantly, the residents are happy too."

And with good reason. The speed cushions have effectively slowed traffic on Florence roads and made them safer for residents and pedestrians. Traffic counters found that the cushions slowed cars approximately 10 miles from around 36 mph to 26 mph as they went over the cushion and to around 31 mph at 100 feet from the cushions.

Traffic Logix traffic calming solutions have been installed in several other Alabama cities as well including Daphne, Huntsville, and Tuscaloosa.
