Transit Modernization a First in Federal Budget

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - March 22, 2016) - The Federal budget, laid out today by Finance Minister Bill Morneau, showed a clear commitment on the part of the federal government to invest in urban transit infrastructure. The budget outlined a $3.4 billion commitment over three years in additional funding to modernize public transit systems in Canada. The Government will fund up to 50 per cent of eligible costs for projects. This announcement was coupled with a strong commitment to deliver a long-term infrastructure plan to develop transformative and modern transit projects over the next 10 years.

"This budget will revolutionize the way we build our cities," said Patrick Leclerc, President and CEO of the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA). "Modernization of transit systems will improve reliability of service, shorten commute times and improve customer satisfaction. The government is establishing a strong foundation that will transform our communities for generations to come."

Funding under Phase 1 of the program will be allocated to provinces and municipalities based on ridership to support projects that will deliver increased capacity, enhanced service or improved environmental outcomes. Projects could include upgrades to subway tracks, bridges, signals and switches, fleet replacement, accelerated design, as well as implementation and construction work for new large-scale projects.

"The increased cost share of the federal government will make a real difference in planning and implementing transit projects across the country," said Leclerc. "CUTA will work closely with the Government of Canada to develop Phase 2 of the program, which will focus on long-term initiatives that will bring the type of transformative mobility options that Canadians expect and deserve."
