Transitional Housing Forum: Cost-Saving Options for Housing People Who Are Homeless

Thursday, February 2, 2012

9 am to 12:30 pm

519 Church Street Community Centre

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 1, 2012) - Transitional housing experts from community agencies including Fred Victor, The John Howard Society of Toronto and Change Toronto will speak to a forum of over 170 individuals about the benefits of Transitional Housing; a time-limited housing option that helps individuals to build the skills necessary to maintain permanent housing in the future. The successes and challenges of transitional housing will be highlighted and discussions about opportunities for developing additional transitional housing in the city will take place.

"If we consider that the projected savings associated with providing transitional housing for former prisoners alone is over $300,000 per person, then we know that we could literally save millions by creating similar opportunities for all affected populations," says Greg Rogers, Executive Director of the John Howard Society of Toronto.

At this time of great fiscal constraint and increasing demand on limited resources, it is more important than ever that cost-effective and evidence-based solutions to expensive social problems, including homelessness, are found.

Speakers include:

  • Nick Falvo, Carleton University
  • Greg Rogers and Amber Kellen, The John Howard Society of Toronto
  • Huda Bukhari, Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture
  • Janet Stevenson, Toronto Community Addiction Team
  • Robin Masterson, Fred Victor
  • Pablo Escobar, Woodgreen Community Services
