Travel Alberta In-Province: Alberta Winter Attractions: Edmonton's Ice on Whyte Festival

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Jan. 12, 2011) - Ice on Whyte

Editor's Note: There is one video and four photos associated with this press release.

Edmonton's winter festival, Ice on Whyte, is attracting artists from around the world. They have gathered in Edmonton's Old Strathcona to carve intricate ice sculptures. During the International Ice Carving competition, festival goers can watch the artists compete as they chisel giant blocks of ice in hopes of winning the big prize.

This year's festival takes place January 13 to 23 showcasing a Chinese theme. This includes a Great Wall of China, an ice pagoda, and a children's play area. The festival will also play live music. Each evening includes Chinese cultural entertainment and demonstrations, as well as karaoke on Fridays. Hot drinks are served, by donation, by the YESS café. Other on-site activities include a 100-foot giant dragon ice slide for the kids and drop-in evening classes for young ice artists.

Ice on Whyte is located in Old Strathcona's Festival Park (85 Avenue and 104 Street). Free parking is available on weekdays at the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market parking lot, while admission tickets can be purchased at the festival gate.

This and other winter activities across Edmonton all come together to make up Edmonton's Winter Light festival, which encourages the celebration of Edmonton's winter spirit and festival culture.
