Travel Trends: Bargain Breaks for 2014 Bucket Lists

Cheapflights.co.uk Predicts Where and When Globetrotters Will Be Holidaying

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - Nov 15, 2013) - With increased competition in the air, tax cuts to lure sun seekers back to the beach and yet more sporting events following a post-Olympic lull, 2014 provides lots of good reasons to take some time out and travel the globe. The team at Cheapflights.co.uk identifies where Brits are jetting to next year for great getaways -- at austerity prices.

'TAPAS TRAVEL':
The city break is set to return -- travellers will be eager to visit a range of countries and try out new experiences and flavours. Appealing to a diverse international crowd and offering good value, we predict Berlin will be top of the city break list as November 2014 marks 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Given the raft of new developments and building projects expected in the coming years, this is a good opportunity for a cultural and historical visit to the German capital.

LOW COST, LONG HAUL:
Airlines and operators will be opening up new routes to the USA, making established ones more affordable -- that's got to be popular with cash-strapped Brits in search of a holiday distraction. Norwegian -- the low-cost 'challenger' airline -- is looking to lay down the gauntlet with direct one-way flights to New York, Fort Lauderdale and LA starting at £149, £179 and £199 respectively. Low-cost Icelandic airline, WOW air, is launching flights from London Gatwick to Boston via Reykjavik next May.

TAKE A TAX BREAK:
Greece
is tempting back tourists by cutting its unpopular restaurant and sales tax from 23% to 13% (effective from August 2013). That, combined with greater competition between the established and low-cost airlines which we expect to see in 2014, particularly on flights to some of the islands -- Norwegian Air is making inroads into Santorini -- will help push prices down further.

OPEN SKIES, LOWER FARES:
The government has just introduced the latest phase of its open skies agreement with the EU, which will see greater competition and lower prices between Europe and Israel. easyjet has been a pioneer, but is expected to be joined by the likes of Norwegian Air and Wizz Air -- which should offer greater choice and be lighter on your wallets. From The Western Wall to the Dome of the Rock and the Mount of Olives -- Israel is home to some of the oldest settlements in the world, including its most-visited city, Jerusalem.

SPORT, SPORT AND MORE SPORT:
The Rugby Six Nations will be a driver of city breaks -- so watch out for a scrum down to Paris, Rome and Dublin.

The FIFA World Cup moves to Brazil between 12 June and 13 July 2014, so if you're a soccer widow or widower, it might be time for a discreet getaway.

It may be less sunny, but tickets for Scotland's biggest sporting event, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games kicks off on 23 July and runs until 3 August.

Our advice is book early for the best deals, usually booking four months ahead secures better prices. If you're not a sporting fan and are looking at the above destinations in their own right, avoid sporting dates and visit in the shoulder seasons -- there'll be fewer people and you'll get more bang for your buck.
