Trican Donates $5 Million to Fight Childhood Cancer

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 14, 2011) - The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation received a generous gift of $5 million today from Trican Well Service Ltd. (TSX:TCW) in support of childhood cancer care at the Alberta Children's Hospital, as well as research at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute for Child and Maternal Health and the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute - both at the University of Calgary. In honour of Trican's incredible donation, cancer patients and their families at the Alberta Children's Hospital will now receive their outpatient care in the newly named: Trican Hematology, Oncology and BMT Clinic.

The funds will be directed specifically to two areas in which our childhood cancer team is nationally- recognized: Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) and Novel Therapies.

"Trican is honoured to help advance care for the brave kids and families fighting cancer," says Dale Dusterhoft, Trican CEO. "This gift is all about improving their health and well-being, and eventually finding a cure for the disease."

"Trican's gift is an important example of how our health care system is strengthened through partnerships," said Minister of Health and Wellness, Fred Horne. "Collaboration between Alberta Health Services, the University of Calgary, the Foundation, and especially generous community leaders like Trican is fueling innovation and new approaches to cancer care."

"Trican's donation is an important investment in the fight against childhood cancer," says Alberta Health Services Board Chair, Ken Hughes. "It gives new hope to patients and families affected by the disease and provides additional resources for the team of specialists working hard to provide the very best care to these kids."

"Trican's generous gift will help bring childhood cancer research and care closer together, so that discoveries in the lab can be translated into better treatments and cures at the bedside," said Elizabeth Cannon, president, University of Calgary. "It also supports the University of Calgary's new strategic direction of becoming one of Canada's top five research universities, grounded in innovative learning and teaching and fully integrated with the community of Calgary by 2016."

"It's great for our families and staff that Trican is willing to step in and make life better for kids battling cancer," say Dr. Doug Strother, Director of Pediatric Oncology at the Alberta Children's Hospital. "Trican's generosity will allow us to build upon our expertise in Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Novel Therapies, helping to ensure we will save more children, faster and with fewer side effects."

"Trican's very generous $5 million gift is the largest we've ever received for Oncology," say Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation President and CEO Saifa Koonar. "Cancer is a word that strikes fear in all our hearts and it seems even more unjust when a child is affected by the diagnosis. Thanks to support from community leaders like Trican, we don't have to stand idly by. We can find better treatments and cures for these kids."

Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Trican has operations in Canada, the United States, Russia, Kazakhstan, Australia and North Africa. Trican provides a comprehensive array of specialized products, equipment and services that are used during the exploration and development of oil and gas reserves.

The Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation raises funds for excellence in child health, research and family centred care. Through the generosity of donors, the Foundation provides funding for innovative programs, state of the art equipment, advanced medical training and internationally-recognized pediatric research.
