Trifacta's Chief Strategy Officer to Keynote at 2014 ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing

Joe Hellerstein Will Draw From His Academic and Industry Experience to Discuss the Implications of Programming the Cloud

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwired - Nov 3, 2014) - Trifacta, a leading Data Transformation Platform provider, today announced that Trifacta's Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Joe Hellerstein, will present the closing keynote at the 2014 ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing on Wednesday, November 5, 2014. Hellerstein will discuss hazards and opportunities for the software industry resulting from current challenges in programming the cloud. Drawing from his experience with the Berkeley Orders of Magnitude (BOOM) team at the University of California, Berkeley and extensive work as an advisor and founder of technology companies, Hellerstein will provide a picture of the current cloud software ecosystem and discuss potential opportunities for future improvement.

"The cloud has changed the rules for software development: every programmer now has inexpensive access to global-scale computing capacity. This presents tremendous opportunity for innovation, but it comes with significant costs and risks in terms of software engineering complexity. Writing code for widely-distributed computers in the cloud is fundamentally different than writing for an individual machine, and we are only now beginning to evolve tools and techniques to enable developers to work effectively in this new environment," said Joe Hellerstein, CSO of Trifacta. "In the field, though, we do see talented programmers continuing to build new cloud systems and applications. In my discussion, I'll highlight some of these best practices from industry, and explain how they inspired research in the BOOM project at Berkeley--resulting in theoretical breakthroughs and new software engineering tools that provide a clearer view of the tightrope between risks and rewards that developers walk when harnessing the power of the cloud."
