Trinity Mirror Cardiff Announces Further Cuts

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 19, 2007) - Amicus the union is angered by Trinity Mirror Print Ltd's announcement of a major restructure at its Tidal Sidings Press in Cardiff which will result in significant job losses.

The wide-ranging proposals affect the entire organisational structure including number of jobs, roles, working patterns and pay levels. In total 17 out of 72 employees will lose their jobs, which is just under a quarter of the workforce.

Amicus had raised concerns about potential job losses at Tidal Sidings following its' move from central Cardiff and management under Western Mail and Echo Ltd to the new press at Tidal Sidings managed by Trinity Mirror Print Ltd. The printing press is now managed remotely from Birmingham.

Andrea Jones, Amicus' Regional Officer said,

"We have only just been presented with the report, but the initial responses from our members have highlighted some concerns. In particular, losing such a significant number of posts has the potential to create serious health and safety risks. We are addressing these issues as a matter of urgency.

"The company will be challenged where the proposals are seen to be unworkable or present a risk and it is hoped that through consultation the number of posts identified as redundant can be reduced. If it is necessary to lose staff, we will work towards ensuring this will be done through natural wastage and with volunteers rather than by compulsory redundancies."

The announcement comes shortly after the launch of the joint Amicus - NUJ 'Media Matters in Wales Campaign' which is highlighting the need to retain the Welsh media in Wales.

Andrea Jones concluded: "A commitment has been given by the Trinity Mirror Group to retain the print operation at Tidal Sidings and we will work with the management to achieve this, but it must not be done at any cost. We will endeavour to keep the fair treatment of staff at the top of our agenda."
