TAIPEI, TAIWAN--(Marketwired - Aug 13, 2014) - In order to establish a new and creative academia-industry cooperation model, National Chung Cheng University (CCU), University of Malaya (UM), and a Taiwanese CNC company had signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the opening ceremony of 2014 Taiwan Higher Education Fair on July 7th at the World Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This tripartite cooperation model signifies an important breakthrough to the academia in both Taiwan and Malaysia. The participating dignitaries included the Vice Chancellor of University of Malaya Mohd Hamdi Abd. Shukor, the President of National Chung Cheng University, Dr. Jyh-Yang Wu, the President of Taiwanese-Malaysian Alumni Federation Tsi-Song Li, and the Ambassador to Malaysia Yu-Zhong Lo.
The MoU encompasses cooperation and collaboration in areas of education, training, and academic research. Through the MS degree program in Advanced Manufacturing Systems and the short-term (6 to 12 weeks) Academic Research Program at the Advanced Institute of Manufacturing with High-tech Innovations (AIM-HI), both at CCU, not only students from the two universities but also faculty members and research staffs of the three parties will be able to go to the respective university and industrial partner for pursuing education and projects on research and development. In particular the industrial partner from Taiwan will be able to provide overseas internship opportunities to students from UM, through which they will gain access to the Taiwanese machine tool industry. Moreover, CCU and UM and their industrial partner may propose joint research and development projects on topics they have shared interests.
The Advanced Institute of Manufacturing with High-tech Innovations, or AIM-HI, at the National Chung Cheng University was established in 2011 under the auspices of the Top Universities Program sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. AIM-HI has played a critical role in promoting the tripartite cooperation. The core research projects pursued at AIM-HI comprise technologies developed for green and intelligent manufacturing systems. According to President Wu of CCU, signing of the tripartite MoU can be considered a substantive outcome of AIM-HI's efforts in integrating domestic technology and setting up an international platform for cooperation and collaboration between academia and industry. The tripartite MoU not only establishes a new milestone for academia-industry cooperation cross national borders, but also represents a huge step toward the goal of reducing the gap between knowledge and skills acquired from education and real-life applications.
In mid-March of 2014, Dr. Yeau-Ren Jeng, the Vice-President of CCU and Director of AIM-HI, led a delegation to visit Malaysia, and held a joint workshop on advanced manufacturing workshop with Faculty of Engineering at UM. The faculty members from UM were particularly interested in the cooperation between University of Malaya, National Chung Cheng University and the precision machinery industrial partners in Taiwan. "They suggested that through the model of tripartite cooperation, faculty members and students of the University of Malaya will have opportunities to collaborate with both academia and industry in Taiwan." Vice-President Jeng remarked.
To further promote advanced manufacturing, AIM-HI has been sponsoring International Elite Student Camp in Advanced Manufacturing over the last three years the Taiwan Comprehensive University Prospective Manufacturing Systems. Not merely local but also international students exchange their ideas and work on the research project in this camp. In 2014, the camp was held at the Hibiscus Resort in Tainan, Taiwan from July 2nd to 5th. According to Vice President Jeng of CCU, he not only was very impressed by the outstanding performance of students from UM participating in the elite camp, but also looks forward to training future engineers with high caliber now that the tripartite MoU is in place.
