The True Cost of Mobility: U.S. Enterprises Spending $1,840 per Employee Mobile Device Annually

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Feb 3, 2016) -

  • Real Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is 116% more than commonly expected, equating to $51.9 billion in total spend for American businesses
  • 58% of the TCO is able to be controlled and therefore reduced
  • Up to $479 could be saved per device annually through appropriate mobile control, equating to total cost savings of $11.5 billion
  • Globally, companies spend twice as much remedying a security breach than on mobile security software, yet 28% of U.S. enterprises report having suffered a mobile breach in the last 12 months

Wandera, the provider of security and management for mobile data, today revealed new research, undertaken with independent market research partner Redshift Research, that provides insight into the true cost of mobility for U.S. enterprises. In a survey of 500 U.S. IT decision makers with material control over their company's mobility, the average cost of enterprise mobility was found to be $1,840 per employee mobile device per year, with a potential $479 that could be saved per device annually through appropriate mobile control.

Perhaps most notably, the survey results shed light on misconceptions surrounding the true cost of mobility, with a number of costs -- including services, security and IT -- not being taken into account when calculating the TCO of enterprise mobility. True TCO is comprised of carrier charges (48%), hardware (21%), IT resources (15%), additional services (10%) and security (6%).

"This is the new normal, and enterprise IT teams need to take note," comments Eldar Tuvey, CEO of Wandera. "For years, most enterprises have considered TCO to be comprised of the cost of the device plus the carrier charges, but this is an antiquated and naïve viewpoint. In fact, in the U.S. 'real' TCO is 116% more than expected. Approximately $1,000 per device of annual costs for services, security and IT are not being taken into account when calculating the TCO of enterprise mobility."

While the costs associated with enterprise mobility are higher than many businesses think, there is good news. Through improved mobile data management, policy setting and security threat prevention, 58 percent of the TCO is able to be controlled, and, therefore, reduced.

The survey also revealed that, globally, companies spend up to twice as much cleaning up mobile security breaches than on mobile security software itself. Of the 28 percent of respondents who reported a mobile security breach in the last 12 months, nearly half indicated that the breach had cost their companies between $40,000 and $400,000.

"As the number of mobile devices grow, so, too, will the associated costs and the breadth of security threats," concludes Tuvey. "In our increasingly mobile world, enterprises need to gain complete visibility in order to retain control of their mobile data, ensure compliance and prevent mobile security threats."
