Tsleil-Waututh Nation Blesses Noons Creek Bridge Site

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor NORTH VANCOUVER, BC, NEWS RELEASE--(Marketwire - Sept. 16, 2010) - Chief Justin George together with other Tsleil-Waututh community spiritual leaders conducted a blessing at Noons Creek in Port Moody. The blessing was organized in response to human remains being uncovered during construction activities at Noons Creek.

"It is extremely important for our ancestors to be honoured and treated with the utmost respect" said Chief George. "This area was once home to a Tsleil-Waututh village that served as a critical link between Burrard Inlet and travel routes to the Fraser River for salmon fishing. We are very grateful for the respect and support shown by the City of Port Moody and the construction contractor in this matter" added Chief George.

Construction is associated with the Noons Creek bridge replacement project being carried out by the City of Port Moody. The project is taking place in a previously registered archaeological site. Included on the archaeological team that uncovered the remains was a Tsleil-Waututh Nation archaeological monitor.

"While working within my territory, any archaeological find is significant, but coming into direct contact with my ancestors is a very special experience for me" highlighted Tsleil-Waututh Nation archaeological monitor Josh George.

Tsleil-Waututh Nation meaning, "The People of the Inlet" have inhabited the lands and waters of their traditional territory since time immemorial.
