TTC Subway Will Become the "Underground Railway" for Emancipation Day Celebration


TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 30, 2014) - Hundreds of people will ride a specially designated subway train to usher in Emancipation Day, the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act of August 1, 1834, which brought about the end of the brutal practice of African enslavement throughout the British Empire.

What: Riders take the "Underground Freedom Train" on the TTC subway to mark Emancipation Day with singing, poetry and stories

When: Thursday night, July 31, 2014, 11:15 p.m.

Where: Meet at TTC subway ticket booth at Union Station and ride to Downsview Station

Who: Ms. Amy Nelson, one of the founding members of the Canadian-Jamaican Association, will act as the "Freedom Train Conductor"

Several hundred people are expected to participate, along with poets, musicians and story-tellers.
