TTC Votes To Start Discussion About Davisville Lands For Oriole Park

Friends of Oriole Park presentation to TTC Board on February 2, 2011 gets favourable reception. Board votes unanimously to start discussion about futute of Oriole Park.

Attention: City Editor, Environment Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor, Transportation Editor TORONTO,ONTARIO LIMITED GREEN SPACE & CITY PARKS--(Marketwire - Feb. 3, 2011) - Friends of Oriole Park ("FOP") today announced that the TTC Board voted unanimously yesterday directing TTC Staff to meet with FOP on possible incorporation of some TTC lands into Oriole Park. On February 2, 2011 at a regularly scheduled TTC Board meeting FOP made a presentation in support of its previously submitted Deputation seeking support for the extension of Oriole Park by incorporation of a modest portion of the adjacent Davisville Yard site. According to FOP the size of the TTC Lands that could be dedicated to Oriole Park amounts to about 2 acres. This represents approximately 20% of the total area of the Davisville Yard and could increase the size of Oriole Park by about 40%.

In its presentation FOP touched on a number of fundamental considerations:
(1) Oriole Park is a small park that is already heavily used and needs to be revitalized. Park space is limited in the older denser parts of the City. The amount of park space available to the community of Deer Park is about 0.47 acres of parkland per 1000 residents; well below the Toronto average of about 4.54 acres per 1000 residents. Oriole Park is the only significant park in the Deer Park community.

(2) A November 2009 study by the TTC on yard capacity to the year 2030 that concluded that the Davisville Yard facility has "unique operational constraints". According to FOP, the apparent limited role of the Davisville Yard in the evolution of the TTC system clearly opens the door to considering alternative uses for this site.

(3) FOP's vision for the expansion and revitalization of Oriole Park has widespread support in the community.

In its presentation FOP Deputation indicated that whatever plans the TTC might have for the use of the Davisville Yard - either as a less critical and possibly smaller yard in the TTC system; and/or as a site for the ultimate development of residential and commercial high rises, it could be in the interest of both the TTC and FOP to have a strong and positive relationship anchored on a revitalized and vibrant Oriole Park. To this end FOP noted that we intend to be part of any public and community consultation process that could affect Oriole Park.

FOP is delighted with the decision by the TTC Board to now support formal discussions with TTC Staff on the possible future use of some TTC lands for additional green space in our community and we look forward to a constructive dialogue with the TTC. A copy of our presentation can be found on our web site.

Friends of Oriole Park is a local community group committed to maintaining and enhancing Oriole Park for the benefit of all park users. FOP's growing membership is diverse and includes members of different ages, lifestyles and backgrounds - young professionals, retirees, parents, grandparents, dog owners, young baseball players and their families and apartment residents (see our web site www.friendsoforiolepark.com).
