Turin Traverse® Platform Powers Access/On Multimedia's Bandwidth and Services Upgrade

North Carolina Consortium Group Serving 13 Rural LECs Drives New Triple Play, Ethernet Services With OC-192 Capacity Upgrade

PETALUMA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 6, 2007 -- Turin Networks Inc., a leading global provider of multiservice-enabled, metro service edge equipment for wireline, wireless, MSO and private networks, today announced that Access/On Multimedia, which operates a 1200-mile fiber optic network for 13 Rural LECs (RLECs) serving customers across North Carolina, has deployed the Traverse® Multiservice Transport Switch to upgrade its overall capacity and enable new services such as Ethernet and IP video. Access/On's newly-upgraded network began carrying live traffic this week.

Access/On originally deployed an OC-48 optical fiber network to serve its member RLECs in 1995, but the equipment has since been discontinued. The organization wanted to step up to the next level of bandwidth and add capabilities for new, revenue-generating services. After evaluating multiple leading vendors including its incumbent supplier, Access/On selected Turin's Traverse platform. The Turin solution was preferred based on its advanced Carrier Ethernet transport and switching capabilities, along with its OC-192 scalability, which gave Access/On the capacity and flexibility to deliver new IP-based services like video as well as Ethernet virtual private line (EVPL) and transparent LAN (E-LAN) services with optimal efficiency and reliability. In addition, the Traverse platform allowed Access/On to upgrade its optical backbone to 10 gigabits while using roughly one-third the space and power of the previous-generation equipment.

"Among the vendors we evaluated, only Turin offered the right combination of service flexibility, optical interconnect capabilities, and carrier-grade Ethernet services that we needed to enable the new services our members wanted," said Jeff Adams, general manager of Access/On Multimedia. "In addition, we were very impressed by the highly positive experience that several of our members and partners have experienced with Turin equipment and service."

Turin Networks is a leading supplier to the RLEC market. As bandwidth-intensive, IP-based applications such as the triple play and Ethernet access continue to boost capacity requirements, Turin's network solutions enable RLECs to rapidly deliver new services over a high-capacity Ethernet/IP optimized infrastructure, for the lowest possible cost.

"Carriers are evolving their networks to provide the capacity and flexibility necessary to deliver a new generation of services," said Chris Stark, president of worldwide sales and marketing at Turin. "Key regional carriers like Access/On, who focus on the serving the rural marketplace, are adopting Turin's Traverse and other products because they offer a scalable, future-proof network solution with demonstrated reliability."

About Access/On Multimedia

Access/On Multimedia was formed in 1994 to provide advanced communication services to the smaller cities and towns of central North Carolina. Thirteen local exchange carriers joined forces to build a 1200-mile fiber network and connected it with networks in other states. Today Access/On is part of a large network delivering advanced communications services. For more information, please visit
