Turning a Tragedy into a Dream: Scholarships for Women in Engineering Awarded in Memory of 14 Women Killed on December 6, 1989

RENFREW, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 5, 2007) - Since the tragedy at Ecole Polytechnique 18 years ago, women from across Canada have received over half a million dollars in scholarship funding to support their dream of becoming a professional engineer.

The women killed at Ecole Polytechnique on December 6, 1989 were targeted because they were female engineering students. In 1990, the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF) was formed in their memory.

From loss has come triumph -almost 100 women studying engineering at Canadian universities have been able to continue their studies with CEMF's support.

Through the generosity of its donors and supporters, CEMF is now providing 16 annual scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $15,000 at the undergraduate, Masters and PhD levels of study.

Scholarship recipients not only receive scholarship funding, but are also honoured at the Annual CEMF Awards Luncheon held in conjunction with the Engineers Canada Annual General Meeting. Each winner is also featured in a promotional brochure sent to universities, provincial associations, donors and stakeholders across the country.

All scholarship recipients are selected based on strong leadership abilities and their ability to act as ambassadors of the engineering profession to young girls. These women are extraordinary and outstanding - and thus, stand as proud role models for others. Through their achievements, they truly honour the memory of the 14 women who lost their lives on December 6, 1989.

Deadline for applications for the 2008 CEMF Scholarships is January 18, 2008.
