MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - Jul 17, 2012) - TVU Networks, the global technology leader in portable live electronic news gathering (ENG) broadcast solutions, announced today that KKTV, a CBS affiliate in Colorado Springs, Colo., deployed TVUPack to deliver more than 131 straight hours of live coverage of July's devastating Waldo Canyon fire.
The Waldo Canyon fire was the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history, destroying 18,000 acres and 346 homes. KKTV deployed TVUPack to deliver the market's most extensive television coverage of the fire and its aftermath.
"Because of TVUPack, we were able to deliver unprecedented real-time coverage of an event that significantly impacted the lives of every resident of Colorado Springs. TVUPack enabled us to cover the fire from every possible angle so that our viewers had the most accurate and up-to-date information at their disposal," said Nick Matesi, VP/General Manager, KKTV.
The wildfires provided an especially challenging broadcast environment for KKTV due to the rugged terrain surrounding Colorado Springs, and the rapidly changing conditions as the fire moved. Used in conjunction with a mobile automated satellite solution, TVUPack was able to deliver quality HD footage over a combination of 3G and satellite links, giving KKTV the flexibility to go live from multiple locations, sometimes even broadcasting live while on the move.
"TVUPack has been an integral component of Gray's strategy to bring live coverage of news and events to viewers in each of the communities we serve. Thanks to TVUPack, KKTV was able to deliver superior coverage of the fire. Going forward, I believe that the people of Colorado Springs will remember who they can count on in a time of danger and emergency," said Jim Ocon, vice president, technology, Gray Television.
Already in use by hundreds of leading broadcast organizations around the world, TVUPack gives broadcasters satellite and microwave TV truck functionality in a lightweight backpack. TVUPack is powered by TVU's proprietary Inverse StatMux technology, which dynamically segments a live video signal and transmits the segments through multiple independent 3G/4G/WiFi/WiMax connections, and the industry's first TVU variable bit-rate (VBR) technology, which dynamically adjusts the compression ratio according to the total available bandwidth. As a result, TVUPack is able to deliver unmatched stability, resiliency and picture quality -- even in the most challenging network environments. TVUPack is simple to use and provides broadcasters with low-latency, HD-quality signal that enables them to broadcast live at any time and from any location.
