#TwestivalTO-Canada Ranked 2nd Most Giving Country During Global Fundraising Event: Record-breaking 24-hour Live Stream Now Underway

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 24, 2011) - More than $230,000 has already been raised by over 150 cities during a one-day, global fundraising movement known as Twestival.

Organised by an army of thousands of volunteers and vocally supported by Twitter's own founders, Twestival events around the world raise thousands of dollars for charity each year.

"It's truly a unique event leveraging the power of social media for social good," said Shawn Griffiths, co-lead for Twestival Toronto, being held this evening from 7 p.m. - 1 a.m. at The Fifth (225 Richmond Street West). "We have a great night planned and can't wait to start broadcasting live to the world!"

#TwestivalTO, as it's known by 3,400 followers on Twitter, has already raised more than $15,000 dollars, placing it behind Riyahd, Brasilia and Beruit for the most money raised globally.

"Our level of engagement with the Toronto community has been projected to a whole new level through the use of social media," said Gavin Sheppard, co-founder and executive director of The Remix Project, Twestival Toronto's selected charity for 2011. "TwestivalTO has helped expand our message to thousands of Torontonians, and together we will make a profound difference on lives in our community."

Showcasing a tech-rich agenda, including 'Canadian Twidol', a QR Code Treasure Hunt, an Xbox Kinect dance off and iPad sketch artists, Twestival Toronto will also feature live performances from The Remix Project's artists. The show will be broadcasted live and co-hosted by Sheppard, MuchMusic's Lauren Toyota and USTREAM talk show hosts, Nat&Marie.

Boasting support from more than 25 local sponsors, including Creative Niche Inc., Rogers Canada, and Hill & Knowlton, along with nearly 600 Torontonians, TwestivalTO will also join a global attempt to set a world record for "most charities supported by a live internet broadcast." The evening's performances will be featured on the global live stream from 9:15-9:50 p.m. EST to help raise money for The Remix Project as well as Save the Children's Japan Fund.

Support for Japan

The Twestival events planned in Japan have been abandoned following the recent earthquake and tsunami disasters, although Twestival has moved to support the country with a dedicated channel of fundraising for Save the Children's Japan initiative, supported by all cities, providing much-needed help to the estimated 100,000+ displaced children in the country.

"As Twestival is continuously evolving, we are able to adapt quickly and although we are maintaining a local focus everyone felt it was important to also leverage our global voice and extend support for international crises like the current situation in Japan," said Amanda Rose, Twestival founder who will be attending Twestival Toronto.
