Two New DEKALB® 73 Series Canola Hybrids Recommended for Registration

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Feb. 16, 2011) - The Western Canadian Canola/Rapeseed Recommending Committee (WCC/RRC) has recommended several canola hybrids from Monsanto's canola breeding program for registration, two of which will be introduced as new DEKALB® canola hybrids in 2011.

73-15 RR provides an unusual combination of high yield and early maturity. An excellent fit for growers in the short season zone, 73-15 RR is set to be the next top performer in the DEKALB brand's strong short season lineup.

73-75 RR is a high yielding canola hybrid with a great all-round agronomic package. It has performed extremely well in Manitoba and seems to respond favourably to environments with high fertility. It also has a strong 'R' rating to blackleg and fusarium wilt.

These canola hybrids are the latest technology in the 73 Series lineup, following quickly on the 2010 launch of the first six hybrids in the series.

"The new products were adapted to address the concerns of specific regions in Western Canada," said Dave Kelner, technology development lead, Western Canada. "For instance, 73-15 RR works well in areas that are limited in the crops they can successfully grow because of a shorter growing season."

Monsanto and the DEKALB brand are heavily invested in bringing the newest technology to the market so growers maximize their profits with higher yields. "73-75 RR is an example of this new technology," said Patrick Comte, DEKALB business manager for Western Canada "It performed so well in the 2010 FACT trials that growers in Manitoba have started calling it the 'Brute'."

There will be a limited quantity of 73-75 RR available for sale this spring, with a full commercial launch of both 73-15 RR and 73-75 RR in the fall. Both products can be viewed in the 2011 FACT trials. In addition, five other canola hybrids were recommended for interim registration. Once full registration is complete, limited quantities will be available for sale in spring 2012.

The increased rate of product innovation from DEKALB is a direct result of Monsanto's commitment to canola research and development as part of their Sustainable Yield Initiative. In November 2010, Monsanto Canada opened a $12 million Breeding Centre in Winnipeg, which will work on creating top-yielding canola hybrids for Canadian canola farmers.
