Two Ottawa Students Earn Honours in Canada-Wide CPA Exam

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - December 04, 2015) - The Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario) are proud to announce that two Ottawa CPA students were in the ranks of just 20 Ontario students to make the prestigious Honour Roll for top marks on this year's Canada-wide Common Final Examination (CFE). Dominic Franchi and Emily Hsiung earned places on the listing of the top CFE writers in the country.

Dominic has Honours Bachelor of Accounting from the University of Ottawa and is currently working at Deloitte LLP in Ottawa. "I chose to become a CPA as it is a prestigious and recognized designation providing proof of competence in multiple areas of business," said Dominic. "It also allows me to pursue a career in a public accounting firm and to specialize in taxation, which is my field of interest."

Another employee of Deloitte LLP in Ottawa, Emily also has an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Ottawa. She cites her sister, who became a CPA before her, as an inspiration: "Watching her succeed in her career showed me how applicable the designation could be in a variety of fields and professions, as well as how much one can learn beyond accounting as a CPA."

In addition to the 20 Ontario students placed on the prestigious 52-member National Honour Roll, Ontario had 782 of the country's 2,218 successful CFE writers. CPA Ontario also celebrated more than 3,550 successful students, who were either admitted into membership or on the cusp of achieving it, during four convocation ceremonies that took place during November. This marks a milestone for these CPAs, acknowledging years of hard work, dedicated study, steadfast work-life balance and a true commitment to the accounting profession and their careers.

The CFE, written in September, is a national three-day evaluation that assesses competencies including essential knowledge, professional judgment, ethics and the ability to communicate. The CFE is an important component of the new CPA qualification program, which includes prescribed education, practical experience and examination requirements.

This was the first time the new CFE was written by a cohort of students, as the new CPA program replaces the legacy Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) programs. Only those who complete this entire CPA program successfully are entitled to use the internationally recognized designation of Chartered Professional Accountant, a profession known for financial expertise, strategic thinking, business insight and leadership.

"Congratulations to all the successful Ontario candidates," said Carol Wilding, FCPA, FCA, President and CEO of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario. "Qualifying to become a CPA is a very challenging process and the resulting career is rich in rewards and opportunities. I am confident that all the students will make great contributions to the accounting profession and will uphold the high standards of the CPA designation."

Interviews with Honour Roll students are available on request.
