Two Students Tie for First in COIN Competition

Richmond Hill and Guelph Students Top CPA Contest

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - June 08, 2015) - Two students -- Claire Peng of Guelph's Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute and Logan Grier of Richmond Hill High School -- have tied for first place in the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario's 2015 COIN Competition. CPA Ontario held its annual competition on May 20 to give high school students considering a career as a Chartered Professional Accountant the opportunity to compete, have fun and earn some cash prizes.

For finishing first, Claire and Logan each receive $1,500 and a plaque. As two of the Ontario students who placed in the top ten of COIN writers, they will attend an Honour Roll luncheon in Toronto on Tuesday, June 9. Claire actually finished tied for second in the 2014 COIN competition.

"CPA Ontario offers the opportunity to participate in the COIN competition to high school students across Ontario and this year more than 200 students from 60 schools took part," said Vicki Liederman, Director, Student Recruitment at CPA Ontario. "This popular and highly competitive event is designed to inspire students to think about how a career as a Chartered Professional Accountant might be the right choice for them."

CPA Ontario also announced the top contest winners from across the province. The first place prize provincially is $1,500, with the second place winners each receiving $1,000 and third place finisher getting $500, with their respective high schools receiving matching amounts. The rest of the Top 10 Honour Roll members each receive $100 and an invitation to the awards luncheon.

The top Ontario-wide winners are:

  • 1st place All Ontario (Tied) - Claire Peng, Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute, Guelph
  • 1st place All Ontario (Tied) - Logan Grier, Richmond Hill High School
  • 2nd place All Ontario (Tied) - Jimmy Zhou, Woodlands School, Mississauga
  • 2nd place All Ontario (Tied) - Kristen Li, Earl Haig Secondary School, Toronto
  • 3rd place All Ontario (Tied) - Yasien Sayeed, Woodlands School, Mississauga
  • 3rd place All Ontario (Tied) - Henry Kim, York Mills Collegiate Institute, Toronto
  • 3rd place All Ontario (Tied) - Samuel Siu, Earl Haig Secondary School, Toronto

To win, the students competed by answering 75-questions at a local post-secondary school. Think it's easy? Would you know:
