Ucluelet Aquarium Benefits from Government of Canada Funding

UCLUELET, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2011) - Today, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo – Alberni, announced support for the Ucluelet Aquarium Society to build a permanent aquarium facility to showcase west coast marine biodiversity.

"The Ucluelet Aquarium is a spectacular addition to the heart of the community. The waterfront location and harbour backdrop is the perfect setting for visitors and locals alike to learn more about our fascinating marine ecosystem while generating employment and economic benefits for the entire region," said Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Alberni on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

The new aquarium will replace the current temporary facility, located in the heart of Ucluelet's waterfront. The new building will house interactive displays, including touch-tanks that will offer a hands-on educational experience, interactive exhibits, demonstration and teaching stations, a lecture and seminar room, a marine observation area, and functional spaces, including an office and gift shop.

"The Ucluelet Aquarium Society is delighted to receive support for our project from Western Economic Diversification Canada. This funding, together with support from community, business and other government programs, allows us to achieve our fundraising goal and complete a permanent Ucluelet Aquarium facility which will benefit residents and visitors from around the world, " said Bill Morrison, President Ucluelet Aquarium Society. "We are proud to realize this important addition to our region's tourism economy infrastructure."

The Government of Canada is providing a $270,500 investment through the Western Diversification Program (WDP) to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of Ucluelet's economy.

This project also received $250,000 in West Coast Community Adjustment Program (WestCCAP) funding, which was announced by MP Lunney, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification on June 29, 2011.

The Government of Canada supports initiatives that combat challenges facing traditional industries, protect resources in affected areas in order to support the long-term success of resource-dependent communities.

Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
