UCoA Upgrades Patient Registration Kiosk to Assist Red Flag Rules Compliance

CORAL SPRINGS, FL--(Marketwire - August 11, 2009) - Unicomp Corporation of America (UCoA)'s POWERstation patient self-service kiosk™ enables improved front office accuracy and efficiency, which in addition to accelerating the check-in process, facilitates collections and positively impacts the revenue cycle. The POWERstation kiosk also integrates a defense against the growing threat of medical identity theft.

Gartner Research estimates that there will be more than 1 million cases of medical identity theft in 2009. To counter this alarming trend, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)'s Red Flag Rules legislation requires hospitals and clinical practices to establish written programs to identify, detect, and respond to patterns or specific activities that could indicate identity theft. The law includes significant monetary penalties for covered healthcare entities that fail to comply.

Accordingly, UCoA sees its POWERstation kiosk as filling an important role in Red Flag Rules compliance because of its easy information gathering and identity verification capability. A recently published White Paper by KioskMarketplace provides a detailed description of how the POWERstation kiosk solution enables these safeguards.

For example, during patient registration, the kiosk can automatically confirm personal data. "Our POWERstation kiosk application provides real-time authentication of patient-supplied information by using the United States Postal Service, Social Security Administration and other public and private databases," says Andy Kaplan, UCoA's president. "The kiosk can also automatically validate a patient's identity by displaying four questions regarding their personal history. By satisfactorily answering these questions, with touch-screen responses, registration will continue."

If the kiosk notes a discrepancy, it aborts the check-in process, and politely prompts the patient to see an available registrar, who can then investigate and handle the matter as outlined in the organization's Red Flag Rules policy and procedure guidelines.

The uniquely versatile POWERstation kiosk provides an effective means for healthcare organizations to transparently comply with the Red Flag Rules legislation, while maintaining a high level of patient-friendly registration productivity.
