UFCW Canada Commends Passage of Ontario's Accepting Schools Act

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 8, 2012) - On June 5th, 2012, Bill 13 came up for final reading in the Ontario legislature at Queen's Park. Otherwise known as the Accepting Schools Act, the bill was passed by a margin of 65-36 supported by both the Liberals and the NDP. Thoroughly debated for a number of weeks, Bill 13 divided the Progressive Conservatives from the NDP and the government on the issue of the Catholic School autonomy, versus allowing students being permitted naming of their school clubs with the use of the term "Gay." The Progressive Conservatives declined to support the bill.

UFCW Canada commends Premier McGuinty and his government's courage in supporting such anti-bullying legislation and providing a new and long awaited mandate for all Ontario schools to allow students to use the term "gay" for student clubs relating to sexual orientation Undoubtedly, continuing to foster an environment of equality within our diverse membership and in our cities and communities will build a stronger, more equal and safer Ontario for all students.

"As Ontario's largest private-sector union, we are delighted to support an initiative that prioritizes the creation of a safer and more inclusive environment in our schools," says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley. "UFCW Canada stands by our national partner, Egale Canada, which has fought long and hard for the creation of Gay-Straight Alliances across our province so that Ontario's most vulnerable, and many times isolated students, are no longer ashamed or afraid to use the word 'gay'."

"On behalf of more than 100,000 members in Ontario, UFCW Canada congratulates the Liberal government and the NDP for having the courage to stand with all students," says the UFCW Canada leader. "We hope that Bill 13 is an indication that the Liberal government at Queen's Park will continue down the prudent path of supporting the most vulnerable groups in our province."
