UFCW Canada-Media Alert for Sunday, June 5, 2005: Migrant AgWorkers Leamington Centre Opens Sunday, June 5, 2005

LEAMINGTON, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 4, 2005) - ATTENTION SUNDAY ASSIGNMENT EDITORS. The Migrant Agricultural Workers Support Centre in Leamington, Ontario will hold an open house this coming Sunday, June 5 at its new location and permanent home. The Centre's new location is at 14 Albert Street, just a few blocks away from central downtown Leamington.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house reception will commence at 3:30 p.m. Many of the migrant agricultural workers in the local area are expected to attend, along with the Centre's support staff. Light refreshment will be served along with musical entertainment, at the Centre's new home which was just purchased a month ago.

For the past four seasons the Centre had operated out of a rental house next to St. Michael's Church on Elliot Street. The Leamington Migrant Agricultural Workers Support Centre's new location is just two blocks to the east.

This community-based centre provides services to over 5,000 seasonal migrant workers who come to Leamington and the surrounding Chatham-Kent / Essex County area every year (mainly from Mexico) to plant and harvest field and greenhouse crops.

The workers come to Canada through a federal program that ensures farmers' employment needs are met, but leaves the workers with no social support and few legal protections. Approximately 18,000 migrant agricultural workers come to Ontario each year. The Leamington centre is one of four Ontario support centres funded by UFCW Canada, in addition to a UFCW Canada Support Centre operated near Montreal, Quebec.

UFCW Canada represents over 230,000 workers in all aspects of the food industry and
