UFCW Canada: Union applies to certify Wal-Mart store
in Gatineau, Quebec

HULL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - March 21, 2005) - The unionization of
Wal-Mart Canada stores continues.

Local 486 of the UFCW Canada (United Food and Commercial Workers Canada)
union has tabled two certification applications to represent employees
at a
Wal-Mart in Gatineau; a suburb of Hull, Quebec.

"It is a great honour for our local to table these two applications for
certification of the main section of the Wal-Mart store in Gatineau, as
well as for store's Tire and Lube Express shop," announced Guy Chenier,
president of UFCW Canada Local 486

The two applications were filed last Friday with the Quebec Labour
Relations Commission.

"We are very proud to carry on the momentum begun by Local 501", said
Chenier, " which tabled applications for the Brossard and
Saint-Hyacinthe stores, as well as Local 503 for the Jonquiere store."

"Wal-Mart will have to get used to this. Employees are firmly committed
to improving their working and living conditions, and we are there to
support them," said Chenier.

"We salute the courage and the determination of these workers who,
despite Wal-Mart's intimidation tactics, are asserting their right to
unionize."

UFCW Canada Local 486 represents more than 2,000 members working in the
retail sector in Quebec's Outaouais region. Local 486 is affiliated with
the FTQ, Quebec's largest union confederation representing 500,000
members.
