HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - Oct 18, 2012) - UHY Advisors has been designated a Common Security Framework (CSF) Assessor by the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST), authorizing the firm to perform the healthcare industry data security assessments most widely recognized by HIPAA, HITECH, states, and healthcare industry participants.
UHY Advisors is one of just nine companies in the U.S. -- and the only one based in Texas -- certified to perform HITRUST compliance analysis, and one of only seven in the U.S. also certified by the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards Council as a Qualified Security Assessor Company (QSA) and as an Approved Scanner Vendor (ASV).
"The HITRUST-certified process lays out proactive steps insurance carriers and healthcare providers can take to safeguard their data, as well as methods for mitigating breaches that have already occurred in their protected health information," said UHY Advisors Managing Director Norman Comstock.
Recent high profile security issues with insurance carriers and hospital chains, including the compromise of more than 1.5 million patient records in the first half of 2012 alone, has brought data security to the forefront for healthcare companies, which face fines, penalties, and reputational risk in the event of leaks of confidential patient information, according to Comstock.
"With the proliferation of data and mobile devices, healthcare executives have good reason to be more concerned about security breaches," he said. "If the first decade of the 2000's was the era of network security concerns, this next decade is one concerned with security of mobile devices, portable storage, and issues related to the cloud."
PCI compliance is an industry mandate designed to protect credit card users' information from security breaches by ensuring the credit card processors -- merchants, online vendors, and the credit card companies -- have adequate security in place to protect cardholder data during processing, transmission, and storage.
"Being able to provide security validation services across platforms, industries, and geographies, and to address multiple compliance regimes like HIPAA, HITECH, and PCI, provides management with greater assurance about their data, allowing them to focus on other important business areas," added Comstock. "And for larger companies, proactive technology assurance processes can make the external audit process easier."
