UK Bikers Have a Need for Speed

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Oct. 5, 2009) - Over 90% of bikers would like to see the national speed limit on motorways increased, according to a survey by Swinton Bikes.

A poll of 2,000 Swinton bike insurance customers found that 92% believed the current speed limit on the motorway and was too low and should be raised.

Of those questioned who agreed with a change, 45% believe the new speed should be 80mph, 21% would like to see it increased to 90mph and a breakneck 16% thought that 100pmh would be best. Almost one in ten bikers would like to see the introduction of European style 'autobahns' which have no speed restrictions.

However, 68% of bikers thought that the national speed limit of 60mph on A roads was sufficient and 84% agreed that 30mph was also suitable for residential areas, although 11% thought that it should be reduced to 20mph.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton motorbike insurance, said: "The UK speed limits have been put in place to protect our road users and ensure the safety of pedestrians.

"Although many bikes are capable of exceeding the national speed limit, we would urge all bikers to drive sensibly and within the law. If they want to burn some rubber they should go to a professional race track and where they drive as fast as they like within a safe and supervised environment."
