UK Drivers Clock Up Over Two Billion Miles During Easter Bank Holiday

- UK motorists drove an average of 83 miles over Easter weekend

- One in five can't afford breakdown cover

- Asda breakdown is GBP 60 cheaper than RAC and AA

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - April 20, 2012) - UK motorists have been busy as Asda research can reveal they drove over two billion miles during the recent Easter Bank Holiday.

The research found that 60% of UK adults drove an average of 83 miles over the four-day weekend. Despite this, a significant one in five did so without breakdown cover.

Increasing uncertainty over a potential petrol strike and a long Easter Bank Holiday weekend could have caused motorists to go the extra mile in their vehicle, yet this may have put them at risk of breaking down.

Some 22% of motorists don't have or cannot afford breakdown cover for their vehicles. Of those who don't have cover, one in four (28%) claim that this is down to the rising costs of driving.

UK motorists are finding it increasingly hard to cope with the rising costs of keeping a car running. A hike in petrol prices combined with high insurance premiums is driving costs up, making it harder for people to stay on the roads.

However, the cost of breakdown cover is a small price to pay when motorists are faced with expensive call out fees in an emergency or breakdown. The last thing that a motorist who has experienced an accident or breakdown may want to do is hand over a large amount of cash. Not only can breakdown cover save motorists time but it can also save them money.

Cash strapped Brits who are finding it difficult to cope with rising car costs could use Asda's Financial Services to find affordable UK Breakdown Cover. Policies start from just £70 a year, which is £60 cheaper than similar cover offered by the AA and RAC.

As drivers gear up for the next Bank Holiday weekend, (7th May) it's not too late for motorists to apply for breakdown cover today.

Top tips for drivers going the distance

  • Check water and oil levels before embarking on a long journey
  • It would be advisable to check tyres for wear and tear, make sure they have the legal tread depth of 1.6mm and the correct pressure.
  • Visibility is vital for drivers so lights should be in fully working order and windows should be clean as well as the door mirrors and lamp lenses.
