Ultra Sponsors DND/NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) Collaboration with Simon Fraser University

DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - July 16, 2014) - Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems Inc. (Ultra) is pleased to announce that it has signed a Collaborative Research Agreement with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Department of National Defence (DND) and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), and Simon Fraser University (SFU). This three-year initiative is worth in cash and in kind, approximately $1.15M with Ultra contributing $500K, NSERC $420K and DND/DRDC $225K.

This Partnership is just one facet of the Ultra's Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI) agreement entered into with Industry Canada. The SADI agreement provides long-term funding allowing Ultra to undertake a six-year $27.4M internal research and development (R&D) programme that will provide competitive advantage against international competition in the fast-growing, military towed, low-frequency, active-passive market. Ultra has done similar partnering with other Canadian community colleges and universities such as the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), Dalhousie University and the University of New Brunswick (UNB).

Specifically, the research with SFU will explore the use of Micro-Electrical-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) as accelerometers for incorporation into thin-line high fidelity directional sensors. It is envisioned that MEMS technology can be used to produce these sensors with significantly reduced diameters allowing for lighter and more manageable towed arrays.
