Unbound Offices and Families' Homes Damaged in Ecuador Earthquake

A Massive 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Struck the Coast of Ecuador Damaging Unbound's Offices and Homes of Families Unbound Serves

KANSAS CITY, KS--(Marketwired - April 20, 2016) -  A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the coast of Ecuador April 16 was felt in Quito, Mira, Esmeraldas and Guayaquil -- all areas where Unbound has sponsored children and elders.

There are no known casualties or serious injuries among families in the Unbound program, though some families' homes were damaged.

The Unbound offices in both Esmeraldas and Guayaquil sustained significant damages, including cracked walls and roof damage, but staff there were already hard at work to get the offices back up and running.

Richard Carchi, an Unbound coordinator in Ecuador, said some families in Esmeraldas and Ballenita, coastal cities located north and south of the epicenter, respectively, suffered home damages including large cracks in their walls and loss of electricity.

"In Guayaquil, one sponsored family lost one of their walls," Carchi said. "They are fine and currently staying with some relatives."

Nearest the epicenter, more than 4,000 people were injured in the quake, with a rising death toll of 525 mostly in the coastal city of Pedernales, the BBC reported.

Unbound works with 200 to 300 families in Esmeraldas, which is closest to the epicenter of the earthquake. Staff members in Ecuador were already making arrangements to assist with rebuilding and cleanup in the affected areas.

"At this moment we are organizing groups to help clean and repair the affected homes where we can," Carchi said.

Unbound assists families affected by natural disasters through donations to Disaster Response.
