Unbound Responds to Zika Virus

Unbound Staff Members in Countries Affected by the Zika Virus Are Taking Measures to Supply Accurate Information to Families in Their Programs so That They Can Make Informed Decisions

KANSAS CITY, KS--(Marketwired - February 11, 2016) - Unbound, an international humanitarian organization working in 20 countries around the world, is responding to the needs of families living in areas where Zika is present.

On Feb. 1, the World Health Organization declared an international public health emergency related to the Zika virus. The WHO cited concerns about a potential association between microcephaly and other neurological disorders and the Zika virus.

Unbound staff members from the U.S. and Latin America continue to be in contact concerning our response to the Zika virus and how to best serve families during the emergency.

Dan Pearson, director of international programs at Unbound in Kansas, said local Latin American staffs will assess the situations in their areas and the response of governments and other NGOs to determine the most effective contribution Unbound can make to keep families safe from mosquito-borne illnesses.

"Our program puts decision-making power directly into the hands of the families we serve," Pearson said. "They assess their challenges and goals and direct the resources we provide to their unmet basic needs. So far we have not seen a dramatic shift toward choosing to direct their funds toward things like mosquito nets and insecticide, but that may change."
