UNIGLOBE Travel International Announces Support of Because I am a Girl Campaign

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 10, 2010) - UNIGLOBE Travel International announced the launch of its worldwide Because I am a Girl charity campaign at a meeting of UNIGLOBE franchisees and travel partners in Barcelona, Spain on Saturday.

For more than five years, UNIGLOBE franchise owners and agency partners have raised funds to help Plan International address basic needs among children in impoverished countries and carry out emergency relief efforts. Because I am a Girl is a more recent initiative by Plan International to empower young girls and women to rise out of poverty and to contribute to the advancement of economies worldwide.

UNIGLOBE Travel International President and Chief Operating Officer, Martin Charlwood, made the announcement to more than 300 meeting delegates from around the world. "As travel industry leaders, it makes sense for us to raise awareness of programs that strengthen economies and create opportunities for young women to succeed. We are calling on our network of independently-owned and operated franchises and global partners in 50 countries to get behind this campaign."

According to Plan International Director of Corporate Partnerships, Brad Henderson, "Study after study confirms that if young women are economically active and healthy, their countries' economies grow and all members of their families benefit. Our long experience on the ground has given us a good sense of how to begin to realize the dream of unleashing the economic power of girls. We are thrilled to have UNIGLOBE on board."

A 2009 report titled Because I am a Girl: The State of the World's Girls revealed that girls in the world's poorest regions are among the most disadvantaged people on the planet. Girls are three times more likely to be malnourished and about 60 million girls are not attending primary school. The report concludes that, each year, struggling economies lose billions of dollars because they fail to invest in girls and young women.

About Plan International

Plan is a global movement for change, mobilizing millions of people around the world to support social justice for children in developing countries. Founded in 1937, we are one of the world's oldest and largest international development agencies, working in partnership with millions of people around the world to end global poverty. Not for profit, independent and inclusive of all faiths and cultures, we have only one agenda: to improve the lives of children. Through programs in more than 65 countries, we give children, families and communities the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and build sustainable solutions for improving their own lives. While we work to improve the lives of all children, we understand that girls face unique barriers, so we address gender discrimination in all of our program work. Visit plancanada.ca.
