Union for HRM Crosswalk Guards says it had zero input on major cuts to guarded crosswalks

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - June 27, 2014) - The union representing Crosswalk Guards with the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) says it had zero input or consultation on major cuts to guarded crosswalks announced this week.

CUPE National Representative Marianne Welsh says, "As for the assessment of locations that was conducted, we don't even know who carried out the assessment or what their methodology was. The 'criteria' they're referring to has not been updated since 1996."

CUPE 4814 President Glenna Casavechia says, "As the union representing this large group of workers, we deserve to have some meaningful input on these kinds of decisions. The Crosswalk Guards play a vital role in getting our children to and from school safely. Children's safety is not something you can put a price on."

Welsh says CUPE will be taking its concerns about the cuts to Halifax Regional Police (HRP). The School Crossing Guard program has been under the direction of HRP since 1998.
