Union Members of Xstrata Copper Canada's Horne Smelter Approve Agreement in Principle

ROUYN-NORANDA, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 4, 2009) - Xstrata Copper Canada is pleased to announce that the members of the Syndicat des travailleurs de la Mine Noranda - CSN voted in favour of the agreement in principle for the renewal of the collective agreement concluded between Union executives and the Company. 87% of employees attending the meeting voted to ratify the agreement.

"We are very pleased that employees approved the agreement. The negotiations we just finished took place in complete transparency and respect, which is very promising for the future" stated Claude Belanger, General Manager of the Horne Smelter.

The new collective agreement provides for salary increases, on average, of 3.1% for the first year, 2.8 % for the second year and 2.7% for the third year. We have made notable progress regarding the following issues:

- facilitate the recall of employees versus subcontracting;

- improving the manpower action mechanism in order to increase flexibility;

- more flexibility for vacation and holiday usage;

- improvement of the current pension plan.
